More aralia. "Bristly Sarsaparilla" or "Wild Elder". Aralia Hispida. This is another one that grows around here - he even mentions that it grows in NC specifically. Hispida means spiny. I didn't know the berries were edible... or that this was a medicinal her... will have to try it.
