Materia Medica Lesson 9-10: Paullinia, Garuana

Gaurana is an herbal stimulant, like an amphetamine... so, of course, MM loved it. There was a cola that included it when I was a kid - it tasted funny, but it was pretty good. I actually did like that... with a gas station hot dog and pickled jalepenos.. that was my after school snack for a couple of years! That kept me awake enough for sports or social activities. The prescription asthma meds I was on back then were so "speedy" that not much really impressed me that way. Now, I can't stand anything like that, except for coffee, a cigar/pipe or even some mahuang tea (in an emergency).

So, Guarana can help with lung issues and perk you up. It is stronger than coffee, but it isn't dexamphetamine. It kind of comes on slowly and lasts a long time. "Stimulates social interaction and conversation." Does effect appetite, but that is temporary.

PAULLINIA (Guarana) SEED. Capsule, #00, 2-4. Fluidextract [1:1, 50% alcohol, 10% glycerin], 20-60 drops. Tincture [1:5, 65% alcohol], 1/4 to 1 teaspoon. STATUS : W/C
