Class Notes from Lesson 3-4 Constitutional

 Lesson 3-4 Intestinal Tract Hormones

5 Primary hormones made by intestinal tract lining.

Gastrin endocrine hormone. Endocrine hormones come from one source and trigger many receptors. Gastrin stimulates secretion of gastric acid and stimulates growth of gastric mucosa. Too much gastrin results in stomach membranes over growing. Bacterial infection in stomach lining can cause gastric ulcer. Yeast metabolites like beer or bread stimulate gastrin. Gastrin stimulates acquired immunity in gut. Can also aggravate food allergies. Protein also stimulates gastrin. Small amount of protein before meal stimulates digestion - cheese, sausage, etc.

Secretin. Stimulates stomach enzymes, water and alkaline secretions from pancreas and liver. Endocrine hormone. Enzymes digest butter fat. Suppress gastric acid. Makes alkaline. Essential t process large, complex meals.

Somatostatin... complex action, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somatostatin_family Suppresses gastric acid. Also produced in small and large intestine and brain, hypothalamus, pituitary and nerve cells that line the gut. Explanation of hepatitis. Stimulates motility and tone of esophagus. Slows digestive tract. Elevated in blood and spinal fluid of people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Inhibits the release of all known GI hormones. Inhibits saliva, liver secretions, splanchnic blood flow. Inhibits intestinal absorption. Shuts gut down when under sympathetic stress. Pauses digestion when under stress, to ease burden on liver. Inhibits growth hormone. Inhibits protein metabolism and increases sugar metabolism. All that allows blood to be diverted from gut during fight or flight.
