Lesson 6-1: The Estrus Cycle
28 day cycle is average. Estrogen begins the cycle. Peaks at day 14-15. Present in moderate amounts after ovulation. Ovaries and pituitary feedback to raise estrogen to peak. Progesterone produced after ovulation from ovarian tissue, lasts until about day 26. The amount of progesterone produced depends on the individual. PMS caused by running out of progesterone too soon. Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone produces Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinizing Hormone which are generally present - used when appropriate. Oxytocin causes the movement of egg down fallopian tube. Oxytocin also facilitates orgasm. Also seals off blood vessels to slough off uterine lining and turn it into menstrual fluid. Progesterone protects from water retention and is anabolic. Estrogen is catabolic. Estrogen builds thick uterine lining. Progesterone organizes it into tissue useful for reproduction. Both are anabolic steroids.
