Materia Medica Lesson 3-9: Argemone, Prickly Poppy

Argemone is a narcotic irritant. Has milky to translucent yellow sap. Fresh sap is caustic. Use top of plant, dried. Tincture makes a good analgesic salve - numbs sore areas. Tincture is bitter, upper GI stimulant and pain reliving - stronger than CA poppy. Seeds are food, like poppy seed, but with mild narcotic effect. Crushed seeds wrapped in in fine muslin, low boiled below surface of water to extract oil is good for burns - add a little vegetable oil and beeswax to make burn salve. Tincture good for headache if from auto-toxicity.

CA Poppy better for children or weak/sick adults. CA Poppy is calming but not as good for pain.

An aside, Bayberry salve is good for wounds.

ARGEMONE (Prickly Poppy, Cardo Santo) HERB. Cold Infusion, 2-3 ounces, to 3X a day. For short duration of use only. STATUS : W/A

From  SPECIFIC INDICATIONS FOR HERBS IN GENERAL USE Third edition Michael Moore:
