Materia Medica Lesson 10-5: Serenoa repens, Saw Palmetto

Diminishes prostate inflammation. Reduces uptake of 5 hydroxy testosterone - damaged testosterone. Prostate needs adequate testosterone. Pygeum also helps.

From  SPECIFIC INDICATIONS FOR HERBS IN GENERAL USE Third edition Michael Moore:

SERENOA

Dysuria from heavy sexual activity. Chronic cystitis/urethritis with prostatitis. Dysuria with partial impotence. Impotence/frigidity, with dysuria. Orchitis/epididymitis, chronic in aged. Acute prostatitis, from excessive sexual activity. Subacute/chronic prostatitis, enlarged, without inflammation; or enlarged with dull ache in older males.

SERENOA (Saw Palmetto, Sabal) BERRIES. Tincture [Fresh Berry, 1:2, Dry Berry, 1:5, 80% alcohol] 30- 90 drops Standard Infusion, 2-4 ounces, all forms to 3X a day.

PYGEUM AFRICANUM (Prunus africana) BARK. 2-6 grams a day, taken in capsules or mixed with enough honey to make into "pills" and eaten. The whole bark is hard to find in commerce, the European pharmaceutical preparations are easy to find in American health food stores...a far more expensive format...and GUARANTEED to "taint" it for urologists.
