Materia Medica Lesson 9-12: Peganam harmala, Syrian Rue

This is another one that can get you kind of weird - it is psychoactive. It has a long history of use among "prophets and seers" in the Middle East. It is rare in North America. Use seeds when possible. Good for use in depressive states with depressed metabolism. Sometimes helps with eczema and psoriasis, leaves applied topically as a tea - also hair tonic. May help with bi-polar, if the person is mostly down, rarely manic. Moderately enhances serotonin. May enhance/clarify vision and hearing.... or cause hallucinations in large doses. I haven't tried it, but it sounds a lot like large doses of nutmeg... which I would have enjoyed were I not allergic to large doses of nutmeg.. it made my lungs burn like I was in a forest fire!

*PEGANUM HARMALA (Syrian Rue) SEEDS and ROOT. Tincture [1:5, 60% alcohol] 10-30 drops, to 3X a day. LEAVES. Standard Infusion for topical use. STATUS : W/A

Eczema, in general (externally). Seborrhea (externally). Acute episodic psoriasis (externally). Tinea capitatis (externally). Cradle cap (externally). Unipolar depressive states.
