Podophyllum, mayapple

Another common plant where I live.... unfortunately half of them grow in the driveway and the other half where the rabbits and deer wander through on my property, so I rarely get the fruit! But, if you go just down the mountain to foothills, this stuff grows EVERYWHERE in huge, dense green carpets, especially in Daniel Boone's hometown of Mocksville, NC.... from there to Hickory or so.

"American mandrake". Then MM calls Lynard Skynard "white trash".... so I'm nearing the end of how much of him I can take today.

The root is a very strong cathartic. It will give you the runs in a most uncomfortable fashion. It is hard on the liver, and causes it to make a lot of bile, can ulcerate the colon. Better used in very small doses in formulas as a bile stimulant and for lower GI congestion. Use very high proof alcohol for tincture to get the rosins. "Do not exceed 3 drops to a dose." Topically can be used for venereal/HPV warts.

The Thomsolnians liked mayapple for purging... I don't.

From  SPECIFIC INDICATIONS FOR HERBS IN GENERAL USE Third edition Michael Moore:
