Class Notes from Lesson 1-17 Constitutional

 Lesson 1-17

Review, Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous System

Sympathomimetic substances mimic a sympathetic nervous system response. Parasympathomimetic substances mimic parasympathetic nervous system response. Adrenergic drugs mimic adrenaline response.

Eye muscles. Both Sympathetic and Parasympathetic nerves control lens shape and pupil dilation.

Good advice on looking in eyes and ears for diagnoses.... looking into eyes not very useful, looking in ears much more useful.. kind of surprised he has kids..... He discussed atropine and belladonna... very dangerous herb if misused.... kids die frequently where I live, due to trying to trip on Jimsonweed. It is anticholinergic So, if you use it, use with extreme care.... it is an affective but dangerous asthma treatment, among other things.

Adrenaline, coffee, cocaine, etc can cause pupil dilation. Anticholinergic and Adrenergic substances make pupils dilate, through opposite processes.

In general, sympathetic causes secretion of thick fluids. Parasympathetic causes watery secretions. Most decongestants, bronchodilator, are adrenergic stimulants... which is why the asthma meds I took as a kid damaged my heart.

One more to go in Lesson 1!!!!
