Lesson 2-7: Autonomic and Androgenic Stress 2
Discussion on blood sugar and the pancreas.
Spleen filters blood. Spleen is a giant lymph node. Under sympathetic stress the spleen contracts and raises blood pressure.
Basal metabolism. Energy consumption. Basic metabolic rate - how fast the Krebs Cycle works. Increases under sympathetic simulation.
Lipolysis. Break down of fats increases.
Sex organs. In general, sex organs turned doff during sympathetic stimulation. Arousal occurs through parasympathetic. Orgasm through sympathetic.
Adrenal Medulla. Massive discharge of adrenaline - epinephrine (80%) and norepinephrine (20%) - into blood stream. Lasts 5-10 times longer than nerve stimulation. Also 5-10 times more powerful.
Also releases endorphin. Endorphins go to opiate receptors.
That reminds me of when a Chinese Chef friend made me a dish so hot I actually blacked out... seriously!
Cortisol released from adrenal cortex, concurrently with adrenalin. Stops healing and inflammation. Explanation of how cortico-steroids can cause damage long term. Use for emergencies. Causes the body to make sugars from body proteins, stores as fat. Effectiveness lessens over time. Cortisol is permissive for catecholamine - makes adrenaline and noradrenaline more effective.
Sweat glands on palms of hands, soles of feet, neck and face. These glands are adrenergic. Adrenaline stimulates these glands.
Gosh, this is long.... 1 hour, 20 minutes.... and dull... time to get that bourbon bottle out of its net bag... maybe a cigar too. It is 4:30 pm... close enough.
Two types of adrenergic receptor sites, Alpha and Beta. Norepinephrine triggers Alpha. Epinephrine triggers both. Discussion of BETA blockers - blocks reception.
Anti-adrenergic prevents the release of norepinephrine, block receptor sites, increased COMT function or increase uptake... prevents adrenergic effects. Relaxing herbs turn on rest and repair. Effects are similar to anti-adrenergic, but mechanism is different. He uses anemone as an example. ... and it turns out that Howie was a cocaine user... makes sense. Amphetamines give me horrible headaches, nausea, etc... so no danger of that for me...
Epinephrine used for extreme allergic response, because it is adrenergic.
Sympathomimetics imitate sympathetic nervous system response.
