Lesson 6-6: Regulations Herbal Poultices
He runs quickly through some salves. Fresh herbs in oil can mold. Wilt plants to half their original weight before adding to oil. Don't use hydraulic press with fresh or wilted plants steeped in oil. Don't infuse in direct sunlight.
He discusses proposed regulations for American Herbal Products Association/American Herbalist Guild. Long discussion on federal regulations. I have found what he says to be valid. Never ask a regulating agency, local or federal for permission or advice. Just do the basics to start your business and wait for them to tell you if there is a problem, then fix the problem. Otherwise, they will come up with so many regulations and fees that you'll never start your business. Or, if you live in a county like mine, they will openly tell you that you have to budget an amount to bribe a certain "county employee".... that happens when 4 inter-related families hold every elected or appointed position in the county.
Discussion on why not having licensure and regulatory bodies is a good thing. "Non-conformists, Unite", as my favorite old libertarian bumper sticker says. Why herbal education can't fit a standard academic model. He was adamant that various and distinct traditions of herbal medicine be maintained - not standardized - and, that it be a "people's medicine"... not requiring professional degrees, associations, licensing, etc. Of course.... I adamantly oppose the FDA, USDA and nearly every regulatory agency, professional guild/association and union in existence.... I am half Celtic, after all, and my ancestors came here to get away from people and governments who told them what to do and taxed them for the privilege of being told what to do.... it is just my nature, and in this MM and I agree.
