Materia Medica Lesson 1: Acacia and Mesquite

Gum Arabic - hardened sap of an acacia tree. Discussion of how acacia trees tolerate drought. Sap is water soluble, makes like a jello. Once common food additive. Gum arabic mucilage formula: 1 part by weight to 3 parts by volume of water.... like 1 ounce gum arabic and 3 ounces water. Good for cough remedy, flavored with vanilla or mint. Good for making lozenges - can use simple syrup or mucilage.

Mesquite is relative of acacia - legume trees and bushes. Teas are mildly relaxing to nervous system, moderately useful for inflammatory conditions. Also slightly mucilaginous, soothing to mucosa and helps prevent viral infections like strep throat.
